The Retry Waits Its Turn
Retrying with exponential backoff and jitter spaces repeated attempts further apart and randomizes them, so that many clients recovering together do not overwhelm a service that is already struggling.
When a call fails, the first instinct is to try again immediately. If a thousand clients do that together, the struggling service never recovers. The Retry Waits Its Turn is exponential backoff: wait a little, then longer, with random jitter added so the clients do not all return at the same moment.
Cap the attempts and the total wait, retry only errors that can succeed later, such as timeouts and 503s, and never retry a non-idempotent operation without a key. When the budget runs out, send the work to a dead-letter queue and move on.
