One Word, One Meaning

A semantic layer defines each business term, such as revenue or active customer, once, so every report and tool that uses it returns the same number.

Revenue means gross to sales, net to finance and something else to marketing. One Word, One Meaning is the rule a semantic layer enforces: each business term defined once, in one place, and reused by every dashboard and query that mentions it. Change the definition and every report moves together, which is either a relief or a reckoning.

Start with the five terms that cause the most arguments. Give each a precise name, a formula, an owner and a change log. Retire the old duplicates visibly, or they will keep returning in spreadsheets.
