Zero Downtime
Zero-downtime deployment releases changes, such as schema migrations or new versions, without taking the service offline, typically through backward-compatible steps and gradual rollouts.
Changing a system that is in use is harder than building one that is not. Zero downtime means the release happens underneath running traffic: add the new column first, write to both, backfill, switch the readers, and only then remove the old one.
Each step is small, reversible and boring, and that is the craft. Expand, migrate, contract. Nobody in the company should notice you did it, because the business never needed to know. Play this one while the old schema quietly retires and the dashboards stay up.
