The Staging Area
A staging area is an intermediate set of tables where extracted data lands temporarily for validation and transformation before it is loaded into the warehouse proper.
Extracts arrive in the staging area first, the warehouse’s backstage, where they can be counted, checked for duplicates and compared with expectations before anything reaches a table people query.
That buffer is worth far more than the storage it occupies. A bad file stopped at staging is an annoyance; the same file loaded into production is an incident with a stakeholder list. Keep staging tables temporary, well named and monitored, and make the promotion step atomic. Nobody sees the rehearsal, which is exactly the point.
