The Great Reconciliation

Reconciliation compares two datasets that should agree, such as the warehouse against the finance ledger, and investigates every difference until the totals match.

A difference of 0.3 percent, and nobody can explain it. The Great Reconciliation is the month-end ritual of making two systems agree, and it teaches more about a data stack than any architecture diagram.

The differences usually fall into a few families: timing cut-offs, currency rounding, late adjustments and records that exist on one side only. Bucket them, explain each bucket and automate the check. A reconciliation run once is an audit. Run nightly, it becomes a safety net.
