A data contract is an agreement between the producer and the consumers of a dataset that specifies its schema, meaning, freshness and quality guarantees, and how changes will be announced.
Somebody upstream renames a column and a dashboard downstream quietly breaks. A data contract is the agreement that prevents the surprise: the schema, the meaning of each field, the freshness and quality promises, and how changes will be announced. The Fine Print Is Friendly is the case for contracts written in plain language and checked by machines.
Start with the dataset that hurts most when it breaks. Validate the contract in the pipeline so violations fail loudly at the boundary, and give producers a path to version changes. Agreements people can read are agreements people keep.
