Sipping from the Firehose
A firehose is a high-volume stream of events, and sipping from it means using buffering, batching and back-pressure so a consumer can ingest at its own pace without being overwhelmed.
Events arrive faster than anyone can read them one by one. Sipping from the Firehose is the art of ingesting a high-volume stream without being knocked over: buffer it, write in batches and apply back-pressure so a slow consumer tells the producer to ease off instead of falling over.
Size batches by time and by count. Decide what happens when the buffer fills, whether to drop, block or spill to disk, before it happens at night. Watch consumer lag, the honest measure of whether your sip is keeping up.
