Segmenting the Silence

Segmentation splits customers or events into meaningful groups, such as by behavior or value, so patterns hidden in the overall average become visible.

A flat line at the top level often hides motion underneath: one segment growing while another shrinks, each canceling the other out. Segmenting the Silence is the work of cutting the total by plan, region, channel or behavior until the quiet number starts talking.

The craft is choosing cuts that mean something. Segments should be stable, explainable and actionable, or they are just decoration. Start with two or three and check sample sizes before you read meaning into small groups. A segment of twelve people is an anecdote.
