Lost in the Translation Layer
A translation layer maps between systems or vocabularies, for example turning source-system codes into business terms, and meaning can be lost when the mapping is wrong.
Between the source and the dashboard sits a layer of mappings: status codes become words, regions become groups, currencies become one currency. When you are Lost in the Translation Layer, every step looks right and the final number is still wrong.
The remedy is lineage and a written definition for each mapping. Trace one record from origin to chart and read the rule it met at each stop. You will find the point where two departments used the same word for different things.
