Cheaper To Do, Than Debade
A play on the saying that it is cheaper to do a thing than to debate it, which in data work means running the query or prototype often costs less than meeting about whether to.
An afternoon of debate about whether the join will be too slow costs more than running the join. Cheaper To Do, Than Debade is the engineer’s shortcut: test the claim, read the query plan, post the number, end the thread.
It is not an argument against thinking. It is an argument for making opinions falsifiable. Keep it handy for the moment the meeting invite lands and you already have a scratch table open. Evidence, attached, tends to outrank conviction.
