Answers Before You Ask

Good documentation answers the questions a reader is about to ask, placing explanations where confusion happens instead of in a separate manual nobody opens.

Nobody reads documentation for pleasure. They read it at the moment something confuses them, which is the moment to be there. Answers Before You Ask is the ambition of docs that anticipate the question: the definition next to the column, the example beside the parameter, the warning before the footgun.

Write from the support questions you keep answering. Put the short answer first, link the longer one and keep the page close to the code or data it describes so it can be updated in the same change.
