The Screen Lowers Its Voice
Dark mode is an interface theme with light text on a dark background, best built with deliberate contrast and color choices rather than a simple inversion.
Dark mode is not a color inversion. Pure white turned to pure black produces glare of its own, and saturated colors that work on light backgrounds can vibrate on dark ones. The Screen Lowers Its Voice is the design-minded version: surfaces in layered dark tones, text with enough contrast and charts whose colors were chosen for both themes.
Check contrast ratios in both modes, test charts and error states, and respect the user’s system preference instead of forcing one. Tired eyes at night notice the difference, even if they never say so.
