Snapshot at Dusk
A snapshot captures the state of a table or system at a specific moment, so it can be compared later or used to recover what it looked like at that time.
Operational tables only remember now. Yesterday’s balance, last week’s status and the open-ticket count as of Friday are gone unless somebody kept a copy. Snapshot at Dusk is the daily habit of keeping that copy, freezing the state at a known hour.
Snapshots make trends possible and audits survivable. They also grow, so decide how long you need them, compress what you can and partition by date. Take one before each risky change, too. It is cheap insurance, and it lets you say exactly what was true when.
