A Duet for Two Keyboards
Pair programming is two people working on the same code at once, with one typing as the driver while the other reviews and thinks ahead as the navigator.
One types, one thinks ahead, and every so often they swap. Pair programming splits the work into driver and navigator so mistakes are caught while they are still cheap. A Duet for Two Keyboards is the literal picture: two people, one problem, a shared screen between them.
It is expensive by the hour and cheap by the bug. Use it for unfamiliar code, hard design calls and onboarding, and skip it for work that needs silence. Agree who drives first, and say your reasoning aloud.
